Blog Reviews

Wojtera's Words-1st Grade
I choose this blog because the class was located in Virginia, USA. I loved this blog, it was very well organized and cute. She posts almost every day, which I believe encourages the parents to check it daily as well so they can keep up with what their child is currently learning about in school. She had some great resources posted as well. Such as a great subtraction game children can play online. Check it out at http://fun4thebrain.com/subtraction/pumpkinsub.html  I also thought it was great that she has a class wiki. She is promoting technology at such a young age, which is the best time for them to learn.

The Tillis Tribune  - Mrs. Tillis’s Second grade class
I choose this blog because it was a school in Florida. I wasn’t very impressed with the layout and posts of this blog. She doesn’t post enough but she does post weekly newsletters to the parents which is a great resource for them. I believe that she should post more of what the students are learning, whether it be pictures or a video. I did however real like that stars post she made; it included pictures of the students work.

Georgetown Elementary School
I choose this blog because it was the whole entire school. It includes a link to each teachers own classroom blog as well. There was so much information provided on the school blog such as a stomach virus alert. This is great way to inform parents of things as such so they can take needed precautions. The school blog also posted video footage from assembly they held as a school. After looking at the wonderful school blog, which even included a countdown to thanksgiving that was very cute, I looked at Miss Burmeister’s 5th grade class. I choose this one because I thought it would be interesting to see what 5th graders are learning about. One  thing I found I thought was great was she had several math website links for the students and parents. http://www.fun4thebrain.com/index.html This is a great website for students to practice their math skills.

Room 17
I choose this blog because it was an art class that consisted of 8 and 9 year olds in Australia. I thought it would be interesting to see how other students learn out of North America. I enjoyed looking at all the different art projects they did. I especially liked to poems they did for their fathers on father’s day. I enjoyed reading each of them.  http://cvivian.edublogs.org/2010/09/03/our-fathers-day-poems/

Apple Experiment

This video shows how the teacher interacts directly with the students in a hands-on experiment on apples. This experiment gives the students the opportunity to share their ideas on what they think is going to happen during the experiment. Do you think that students gain more from lessons such as this one shown in the video? Do you think that hands-on experiments should be used more in the classroom?

Teaching in the 21st Century

This video shows just how much technology is used in our students daily life and how we need to be incorporating it into our curriculum. I was somewhat shocked to learn some of the statistics shown in the video, especially how many teachers aren't teaching new technology because they don't understand it themselves. As one of the students said "If we learn by doing, then what are we doing sitting here?" I believe that students do learn more using technology in the classroom. Do you agree? What do you think can be done to promote teachers to keep up with technology the 21st century?

Happy Fall!!

My name is Sara Fair and I'm from Tuscaloosa, AL. I graduated from the University of Alabama in 2008 with a degree in Financial Planning. I have always regretted not going through with education so now I'm back and enrolled in UWA's 5th year non-traditional program and also obtaining my masters in Elementary Education at the same time. I have really enjoyed it so far and look forward to the rest. I will graduate in December 2011.
I have one brother and one sister. My brother and his wife are expecting a baby boy in March and I can't wait to be an Aunt! I enjoy spending time with my family, friends and boyfriend. I love this time of year, Fall is my favorite, escpecially beacuse it's football season. ROLL TIDE!!!
